Saint Odulphus Church

The Sint-Odulphus Church is a Protestant church of the Dutch Reformed Church in Yerseke in the province of Zeeland.

The parish was founded in the 12th century with Saint Odulphus as its patron saint. From 1355 to 1413 a new church was built. The church was a chapter church until 1413, after which the chapter moved to Goes that year. Between 1450 and 1500, a three-aisled nave, a transept, a choir clad with lead stone, and a vaulted sacristy were added. In 1532, the nave was destroyed by fire. In 1603, restoration works were carried out on the choir and the transept. The dilapidated freestanding tower was demolished in 1821, and in 1824, a small bell tower was placed on the church roof as a replacement. In 1887, a new 51-meter-high neo-Gothic tower was erected against the west wall of the transept. However, this tower was destroyed during shelling from French warships at the beginning of World War II during the fighting in Zeeland on May 16, 1940, resulting in the loss of many beautifully carved figures and the wooden barrel vault. The church choir and transept were rebuilt in 1948 based on old data, and from 1974 to 1976, the destroyed tower was reconstructed.
