The Hoorneboeg has a history as a country estate for centuries. Until 1792, De Hoorneboeg was a small, barren mountain in the middle of a heathland, caused by pushing up land ice in the Ice Age.
In order to breathe more life into agriculture in the Gooi, pieces of the heath were leased since the beginning of the 18th century. At first only bordering Loosdrecht and 's-Graveland, but eventually also the area that is now called De Hoorneboeg.
From 1792 onwards, stately country houses – always on top of the hill – alternated. In the meantime, sometimes something was built in other places.
