Fancy a detour? Want to stretch your legs on a stately estate? Contemplating something on the edge of the Dream Pond? Then Huys te Warmont is a beautiful destination. The estate is not large. However, with its centuries-old yew trees and its beautiful country house, it is a fine and quiet natural oasis of great cultural value. Huys te Warmont is part of the Hollandse Duinen National Park.
It is wonderful to walk all seasons between yew trees, swamp cypresses and over the beautiful old oak avenues. Occasionally you look out over grasslands with names like Droomweide. There is also a castle moat that disappears between the chestnut trees into the forest to reappear a little further on as a Dream Pond. When walking through the park-like forest you can feel the centuries of history. This is also clearly visible in the garden and landscaping around the house.
Historic ground
Do you walk under all those ancient trees? Then think back to the Dutch History that you used to get at school, because you walk on historical ground. The earliest history of the Huys te Warmont is shrouded in mystery. The foundations date from the 12th or 13th century. A century later, the Lords of Warmond borrowed it and gave the Huys their name. From the 13th to the 16th century, the Huys was inhabited by the Van der Woude family. Then it came into the hands of the 'Watergeuzen family' Van Duvenvoirde.
aren't van Duvenvoirde, together with the other 'nobles' of the Confederation of Nobles, stood at the cradle of the Republic of the Netherlands. At the beginning of the Eighty Years' War, the Spaniards destroyed the Huys at Warmont, but the Van Duvenvoirde family rebuilt it. Heir Johan Van Duvenvoirde van Wassenaer moved into the Huys and became a notorious admiral on the war fleet of Holland. After that, the estate was sold several times to other well-known noble families, such as Van Leijden and Van Limburg Stirum. Until well into the 20th century, work was done on the decoration and beautification of the estate, so that you can see the changing taste of many centuries in the landscape.
The Huys in Warmont is still inhabited, it now houses a number of apartments.
