Under the oak tree on the Kruisberg is a striking stone. It turns out to be the pedestal of a crucifix that has come loose from the stone. The text on the pedestal reminds us that Arnold Rouillon died suddenly here on 30-11-1860. And, as was customary at the time, the stone in writing and image (skull) points to the memento mori, the 'remember to die', because death (always) comes unexpectedly, as the fate of Arnold Rouillon makes clear.
Johan Arnold lived with his brother Johan Caspar in the Rodestraat in Partij, in the farm with the year 1788. They owned land in Partij, Mechelen and Wahlwiller, in the latter place on the Karstraat, among other places. About the cause of death of the 46-year-old Johan Arnold Rouillon, the priest of Mechelen writes in his Liber Defunctorum that on the way back from Eys he accidentally fell under the cart or the horse in the open field. He was killed instantly. It is not stated whether this was preceded by a cardiac arrest.
