Former Franco-Batavian army camp

Source: Provincie Utrecht

Description

In 1804 there was an army camp of Napoleonic soldiers under the command of General Auguste de Marmont. It was part of an 18,000 large army here on the Utrecht Ridge. To keep this great power quietly occupied, the Pyramid was made. It not only had a symbolic function, but also a practical one. On top of the Pyramid was a wooden tower that offered a view of the surroundings and the ZUiderzee. The Zuiderze was of strategic importance because it was expected to be an invasion of the English.
