The artwork 'Windvanen' by Hugo Vrijdag refers to a historical event: the sea battle at Bergen op Zoom in 1574.
The seven 'silver wind vanes' are largely placed in the waters of the Binnenschelde.
On the south side, the year 1574 is shown in blue numbers, and on the north side, the year of the design: 1999.
Hugo Vrijdag says about this: "Stilled, although their shape suggests that they are moving, the seven vanes come walking up to the quay.
The first vanes are already on land; land where there used to be water." Bergen op Zoom was located by the Scheldt with large tidal differences before the construction of the Kreekrakdam as part of the Delta Works.
The sea battle on the Scheldt at Bergen op Zoom took place at the end of January 1574. The cities of Holland and Zeeland fought against the Spanish oppressor.
