In 1843, the Ursuline sisters settled in Sittard. They established an educational institute for young girls from Sittard and the surrounding area, with a boarding school (or internat). The sisters provided not only secondary education but also primary education, a nursery school, and even a sewing, knitting, and darning school.
The Ursulines have played a significant role in women's emancipation in the region through their education for more than a hundred years. In the Ursuline boarding school, in the oldest wing of the Ursuline convent, there is now a beautiful four-star monastery hotel with an international character.
