The Halsche Beemden in the valley of the Merkske is one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the Noorderkempen. Unfortunately, biodiversity is under immense pressure due to the large amounts of nitrogen and ammonia produced by large poultry and livestock farms. Together with West Flanders, the Noorderkempen has the highest concentration of intensive livestock farming. On average, 23.4 kg of nitrogen per hectare is deposited in Flanders. In this area, it rises to more than 40. Vulnerable vegetation such as peat bogs can only tolerate 8 kilograms per hectare. Oak forests can handle about 20 kilograms.
