De Halsche Beemden in de vallei van het Merkske is een van de mooiste natuurgebieden in de Noorderkempen. Jammer genoeg staat de biodiversiteit enorm onder druk door de grote hoeveelheid stikstof en ammoniak dat geproduceerd wordt door grote stallen van pluimvee en groter vee. Samen met West-Vlaanderen hebben de Noorderkempen de grootste concentratie aan intensieve veeteelt. Gemiddeld valt in Vlaanderen 23,4 kg stikstof per hectare. In deze buurt loopt het op tot meer dan 40. Kwetsbare vegetatie zoals veengebieden kunnen slechts 8 kilo per hectare aan. Eikenbossen ongeveer 20 kilo.
