The estate is forbidden for dogs, bicycles, etc. The (hidden) entrance gate for pedestrians is next to the large entrance gate. It is only open during the day.
Hardenbroek is first mentioned in 1382. In 1536 the first list of knight's court towns appeared. Hardenbroek is included in this. The house was then occupied by Joost van Hardenbroek. In 1662 Pieter van Hardenbroek died who had no sons. He bequeathed the house to his nephew Hendrik Gijsbert van Hardenbroek. He sold it in 1684. In 1733 Willem Kerckrinck rented the house. Later he bought it and spent a lot of money on a thorough renovation. When his widow remarried, Hardenbroek was publicly auctioned. The buyer was Jan Adolf van Hardenbroek, lord of Hardenbroek, Lockhorst, Bergestein, 's-Heeraartsberg, Bergambacht and Ammerstol (1721-1791). The house came back to the Van Hardenbroek family.
The castle was restored in 1995. The estate is largely freely accessible. Henriette Arnoldine baroness van Hardenbroek-Snouck Hurgronje (1912-1994) left the house to her son Mr. Francis Loudon.
