In 1901, the NS started building a marshalling yard in the Zanderij Maarn, a central location in the country. Freight trains could be assembled at the yard, so that the number of shunting movements at other marshalling yards (such as in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht) could be limited. Between 1915 and 1918 the marshalling yard was considerably expanded. When it was completed, there were 17 kilometres of track. In 1932 the shunting process came to an end. After the sand extraction by the NS was terminated, the yard also fell out of use in 1993 and was largely demolished. Concrete remains of two turntables for locomotives are still visible in the excavation. The turntables now belong to the industrial heritage. One of the turntables is no longer in its original place.
