The Old Harbour is the original inner harbour of Veghel. This was dug in 1826 at the same time as the construction of the Zuid-Willemsvaart and ensured that the built-up area of Veghel was connected to it. As a result of this water access, combined with a tram and rail connection, the port became an attractive location for companies from the middle of the 19th century.
Because the Zuid-Willemsvaart, the tram line 's-Hertogenbosch - Veghel - Helmond and the railway line Boxtel - Wesel came together in Veghel, it became a very important traffic junction in the region, and as a trimodal transshipment point it occupied a leading position in the field of freight transport. Veghel experienced rapid growth during this period and attracted many newcomers from the surrounding municipalities and beyond. In 1846, Abraham Jacob van der Aa described the area around the harbour as "a lively neighbourhood" because of the establishment of shops, warehouses and inns that sprang up in various places. In the period from 1860 to 1870, Veghel was even in 5th place in the top 10 of North Brabant municipalities with a positive migration balance. After 1870, however, this growth gradually slowed down again.
The WSV Marina Veghel is a marina at the end of the Old Harbour, in the old turning basin, on the Heilig Hartplein in the centre of Veghel. The recreational harbour is managed by WaterSportVereniging Veghel.
