Description

As a former fortification, the Koeneschans is part of the Old Dutch Water Line. The former redoubt is located on a peninsula in the river Vlist and is located on the border of the Krimpenerwaard and the Lopikerwaard. The redoubt is located at the intersection of the West and East Vlisterdijk, Bonrepas, Fransekade and Slangeweg. Around the Koeneschans are the Koeneschans bridge and the Schansbrug.

The Koeneschans is originally a defensive structure from the Eighty Years' War. The first reference to the redoubt dates from a letter dated 9 May 1575, in which 'Fort de Vlist' is mentioned. It is unclear what this fort looked like.
