At the foot of the Heimenberg lies the most imposing hornwork of the Grebbelinie. The defenses on the Grebbe offered space for more than 1000 infantrymen in the eighteenth century. There, together with 150 artillerymen, a dozen horsemen and almost 40 guns, they had to close the Grebbedijk in time of war. For quartering, they were dependent on the houses in the hamlet of De Grebbe. The position was of great importance because of the inundation lock with which water from the Lower Rhine could be let in.
