Oud-Naarden Estate

Description

You are now on the Oud-Naarden estate, owned by the Dudok van Heel family since 1865. The sand mill and watercourses were dug afterwards. The youngest part of the sand mill here, is from the 70s of the last century. In the 90s you still had to buy a ticket to enter this estate. The estate originally consisted of monastic land, given to Naarden by the Regular Monastery after the Spanish massacre of 1572 to meet the needs of orphans and widows. In 1640 these lands were auctioned to finance the construction of the Naardertrekvaart and bought by the Amsterdam merchant De Wilhem. Owners after him apparently could not hold up their stand and after auction at the end of the 18th century it became fragmented. The current estate is the eastern core of Oud-Naarden as it was brought back together by the Dudok van Heel family, starting with an inheritance from a daughter-in-law of J.P. van Rossum, owner of an even larger asset, Nieuw Valkeveen.
