The Carmelite monastery was founded in 1875 by German Carmelites who had to leave their convent in Cologne (Sankt Gereon) due to the Kulturkampf. The monastery and chapel were built according to a design by architect Cuypers, featuring sober neo-Gothic elements. Since 2002, the monastery has been a national monument.
The monastery has become particularly well-known because the saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) lived here (1938-1942). Those who want to get to know the person of Edith Stein are confronted with a passionate truth-seeker. That love for the truth has defined her whole life.
