The history of Thorn, also called the 'white town', goes back to the year 975.
Thorn in Limburg is very close to the Belgian border. Thanks to all the white houses in the city center, the place is also called the 'white town'.
The history of this town runs almost parallel to the history of the Thorn abbey, which Saint Ansfried founded in 975. The church was a stiftkerk, the main church of the monastic community, and becoming a member of this Thornse stift was not easy.
If you were not of high position, then a place in the Thornse stift was unfortunately not for you. In 1797, however, the abbey was abolished after the arrival of the French, with all abbey buildings except the church also being demolished.
This Gothic abbey church with baroque décor still stands, after several restorations. In March 2020, burglars punched a hole in the treasury display case and took some precious liturgical items.
Fortunately, some of the loot was recovered during an arrest and the objects are now safely back in the treasury.
