This church commemorates Saint James the Greater, for whom thousands of people walk the Camino to Santiago de Compostela every year.
In memory of Saint James the Greater, millions of walkers have walked the well-known Way of St. James, also known as the Camino to Santiago de Compostela.
In the meantime, the route is not only taken by believers, but by all kinds of pilgrims who are looking for meaning and a look inwards. Hundreds of churches in Europe were also dedicated to Saint James the Greater, including this one in Roosteren.
The original Roriental church from the thirteenth century was replaced in 1843 by the current church, designed by architect Jean Dumoulin. During World War II, the church suffered damage, which was repaired in 1946. The church has since been designated a national monument.
The Church of St. James the Greater is one of the wonder locations on the Route full of Wonder. During this cycle route through the Grensmaas Valley, more than 30 locations can be visited digitally when they are not open to the public. Curious about the stories or take a look inside?
