Recreational lake Hanevoet - popularly called Hanevoetvijver - is a small lake in the Gestel district of Eindhoven. The lake is intended for recreation. The surface is 5.1 Ha and the water is up to 5 meters deep. The circumference is 1.3 km. The recreational lake is accessible all year round. There are two islands where birds can nest and rest in peace. The water level is maintained by a branch of the stream "de Run". The name is a reference to the historical name of this area.
History:
The lake was created in 1971 by sand extraction for the Hanevoet district.
Due to the dominant south-westerly wind, the north bank eroded. In 1973 the waterfront was reinforced with the rubble of the demolished St. Antonius van Paduakerk in Eindhoven, also known as the Fellenoordkerk.
In the 1990s, 2 people drowned. One by suicide and the other fell through the ice and could not be saved because he disappeared under the ice.
The hiking trails around the recreational lake were constructed in 1972, with a total length of three kilometers. This makes it possible to walk all the way around the lake and through the park. The paths are paved..
In 2011, a dike, with an asphalted cycle path on it, was built between the stream "de Dommel" and the pond.
Recreation
The lake is not suitable for water sports enthusiasts. Canoes, rowing boats and SUP boards are welcome. Motorized sailing is prohibited with the exception of electrically powered vessels. Swimming and skating is at your own risk.
The water feature is popular with carp anglers, who can hook huge specimens here.
Every year there is a mini-triathlon for primary school students. Swimming is then replaced by canoeing.
In the surrounding park there is a playing field and a playground for the little ones.
A round pond is loved by walkers and dog owners. There is also a gated dog walking area.
