The Ceres village is located between Stadskanaal and Musselkanaal in a bend of the canal. In 2020, the village had 920 inhabitants. The village is named after the goddess of agriculture: Ceres. The Ceres village originated as a workers' district when Stadskanaal underwent rapid development after World War II. Close to the village was a large factory complex of Philips. Philips settled here in 1955 with a factory for picture tubes and later a factory for semiconductors. At its peak, more than 3,000 people worked there. On May 18, 2004, the company decided to permanently close the establishment in Stadskanaal at the end of 2005.
