It is a beautiful sight and worth seeing the sheep walking through Exloo. This can be done both on departure in the morning and on arrival in the afternoon. Time stands still for a moment, as it were. In the middle of Exloo is the sheepfold and next to it our information center in a characteristic farm. We would like to tell you a lot about the sheep herd, the different breeds and herds and about the past and present of the Exloo sheep herd. In addition, you can go here for tourist information, cycling and walking routes and souvenirs.
We have about 250 Drenthe heath sheep and that number is considerably increased in the spring with the arrival of the lambs. The Drenthe heath sheep is a rare and indigenous breed and the oldest sheep breed in mainland Western Europe. About 6000 years ago, this horned sheep was already in the Netherlands.
The sheepfold is housed in the farm at Hoofdstraat 57. Right next to the green and opposite the town hall. Nearby there is the possibility of free parking. There are regular activities in and around the sheepfold.
Once outside, the herd is usually grazing on the Molenveld or in the Odoornerdennen (together about 150 hectares). Here you can completely relax at the sight of the grazing herd. If you have any questions, you can always contact the shepherd. Please remember to stay on the trails because of the reptile territories and make sure your pet is kept on a leash. A visit to the herd on the Molenveld can easily be combined with a walk.
Finally, in the information centre, next to the sheepfold, you can learn all about sheep and sheep breeds and about the role of herds in the Netherlands.
