Odoorn is a place in the municipality of Borger-Odoorn, in the province of Drenthe. As of January 1, 2021, Odoorn had 1,890 inhabitants. According to Van Berkel and Samplonius, the name Odoorn is derived from the personal name Odheri, via Oreng or Oeringe and Odering. The oldest document in which the name Odoorn appears is a sealed letter from July 2, 1327, from the monastery Ten Nije Lichte. In a letter from 1376, we encounter the name Odoorn again. There it is referred to as Oderen. In a manuscript from 1548, the name still appears, specifically in the expression: "the pastor of Oderen." In a manuscript from 1393, the name is Odern, in one from 1431 it is Oederen, and in one from 1546 we find: "the borgen of Oideren."
