Dunningen

Description

Dunningen was a havezate in the neighboring village of the same name between the Drenthe village de Wijk and the Overijssel town of IJhorst in the Dieverderdingspel, near the river Reest.

It is unknown when the house was built on the Dunningen estate. Presumably a medieval building already existed. Dunningen has never been an impressive havezate. It seems to have been more of a political instrument to gain access to the Knighthood of Drenthe through the possession of this havezate. This succeeded in 1604 when the then owner, Johan van den Camp, received tax exemption for the havezate Dunningen.

Dunningen used to be one of the 18 Havezaten in Drenthe. However, this right of Havezate seems to have been solely on the property of Jhr. VAN DER CAMP. It is not unlikely that the name Dunningen is derived from Duiningen or a possession and exploitation in the dunes, being sandy heights. An important part of Dunningen is occupied with forest and very sandy and high. Most likely, dunes were here centuries ago. One more reason for this suspicion lies in the fact that on the south side of the river Reest, approximately opposite Dunningen, there are the IJhorster dunes. An important strip of high and partly barren sandy soil also runs northwards from Dunningen through the Oosterwijk to the Hoogeveense Vaart, which strip unites on the Wijkerbroek with rough heights, overgrown with forest and heathland, and intermediate lows. These heights have certainly been dunes for centuries.

The Dunninger-es, an ash soil near the former havezathe that lies on lands surrounding from sixty to eighty centimeters higher, is not found anywhere in the Reestdal. That says enough about the age of such an ash, because every year the ash became slightly higher due to the manure from the potting shed. The havezathe that lay there , there is nothing left of it. Now there is a piece of forest on that spot, which borders the Reest. No one knows exactly where the havezathe was located.

In the second half of the 17th century, the old buildings were demolished and replaced by a new havezate. Due to financial problems, the havezate had to be sold and came into the possession of Cornelis van Dongen tot de Oldengaerde. In the 18th century, the Van Dongens were part of the Knighthood by virtue of the possession of the havezate Dunningen.

Through inheritance, Dunningen came into the hands of Edzard Jacob Tjarda van Starkenborgh. He had a new mansion built around 1780 and requested that the right of havezate be shifted to the newly built house. After the death of Tjarda van Starkenborch and his wife Rutgera Christina Elizabeth van Dongen, the house was sold around 1793 to the patriot and member of the Loffelijken Etstoel der Landschap Drenthe, Mr. Wijncko Tonckens. The new owner had the havezate demolished.
