Havelterberg

The Havelterberg is a hill with heathland on the Holtingerveld northwest of Havelte. Next to this hill are the dolmens D53 and D54.

The Havelterberg is part of the arched moraine complex of Steenwijk, on which the Woldberg is also located. The Woldberg is 26 m + NAP. The highest peaks of the moraine arch are the Bisschopsberg and the Havelterberg. This moraine complex was created during the penultimate ice age, the Saalian period. In the Saalian there are several phases of glaciation, in which a series of glacial moraines are formed. During an early glaciation phase, the ice reached as far as the Texel-Gaasterland-Steenwijk-Coevorden line. Thick layers of ground moraine were deposited locally along the ice edge. The material of the ground moraines, the boulder clay, consists of a mixture of loam, sand and gravel, erratic boulders also occur. Later, the ice advanced further south and the ground moraines from the previous glaciation phase were pushed up into glacial moraines. These glacial tills were then run over by the advancing ice and transformed into drumlin-like structures. In the last ice age, these deposits were locally covered with a layer of cover sand.
