The Carmel Monastery was a monastery of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on Burgemeester Wuiteweg in Drachten. Designed in the style of the Delft School, the monastery was built in several phases and is listed as a national monument in Drachten.
The Carmel Monastery was founded in 1935 by the Carmelite Sisters, also known as the 'order without shoes'. The rule dates back to a rule from 1226 but was reformed in 1564. The goal was to achieve union with God through prayer and penance and to enhance the intensity of prayer in the church. The Carmelite Sisters earned money by baking hosts, knitting, and lingerie work and through almsgiving. There are several publications on spiritual life and artistic drawing.
