About the Mennonites in Balk, Van der Aa writes in his Geographical Dictionary of the Netherlands: "Also the Mennonites, of which there are 100 souls, have a church and community here, which does not belong to the General Mennonite Society, but in which four Brother Admonites are served. This is still the only congregation of the Old Flemings in Friesland which still distinguishes itself by simplicity of worship and dress, as well as by modesty of manners and way of life."
