Poppendam was a village north of Amsterdam and was located east of the current Zunderdorp and north of Ransdorp in Landelijk Noord. The village was one of the oldest settlements in Waterland and even older than Amsterdam. The village was located in a low-lying peat area where originally many peat rivers such as the Waterlandse Die flowed into the Almere, later the Zuiderzee. To prevent the salty seawater from penetrating deep into the land via these rivers, many of these streams were dammed, such as in Poppendam.
