Keersluis Nieuwe Diep is a lock between the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal and the Nieuwe Diep. Next to the lock is Bridge 12P. Both are located in the Western Merwedekanaaldijk.
The lock was built in 1937 and 1938 in connection with the widening of the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal. It was eagerly anticipated at the time, as caisson construction was used instead of pile foundations. Caissons were allowed to sink into the ground under their own weight to a sand plate at a depth of 15 meters. There was no guarantee that the work would be completed quickly; one of the sections sank slowly into the canal because the soil there turned out to be softer than the soil on the side of the lake. By quickly excavating the hard side, the section could be placed in the correct position. During the installation, one of the workers also fell eight meters down; he survived with a severe concussion.
