It is a stone relief by Jan Meefout, which he himself carved out on a detached column near the Nieuwe Meersluis. It was commissioned by the municipality of Amsterdam; it would remain Meefout's biggest assignment. Meefout first outlined the design. He drew a swimming man among fish, a human figure standing firmly on the ground and a flying man among birds.
Then he made a model in clay and then in plaster. In order to achieve effect, a large block of muschelkalk was hoisted and bricked into its current place by means of a lifting buck. After that, Meefout had to chop for about two years to get the statue completed. To this end, a small workshop was placed against the brick wall. At the top of the image is the year "1957".
