The Zaanstreek is a region in the Netherlands and one of the oldest industrial areas in Europe. It is located in the province of North Holland, on and to the north of the North Sea Canal. The Zaanstreek lies on both sides of the Zaan, which flows into the IJ via the North Sea Canal and is navigable for small coastal vessels. The current municipality of Zaanstad is often considered to be entirely part of the Zaanstreek and is frequently equated with it. This is incorrect, as Oostzaan, Wormerland, and Markenbinnen are also included in this.
