Two centuries ago, rescuing shipwreck survivors was of a completely different order than it is today. The original rowing lifeboats made way for super-fast motorboats, and the old-fashioned cork life vests were replaced by modern survival suits. This walking route starts at the National Rescue Museum Dorus Rijkers, where you can view historical lifeboats and much more. With a virtual reality headset, you can experience a rescue operation aboard the Nh1816, the latest harbor rescue boat from the KNRM. But you can also really step aboard the Johan de Witt, which takes you on a tour through the inner harbor of Den Helder. We are here to walk, so we will save that trip for another time.
