Wherever we walk, the Long Jaap keeps an eye on us. This lighthouse, officially called Kijkduin, is, with a height of 63.45 meters, the tallest still active lighthouse in the Netherlands and the tallest cast iron tower in Europe. The lighthouse has had the status of a national monument since 1988. Lots to be proud of, but also many concerns. The lighthouse has long been inaccessible to the public due to serious cracks found in the walls and floors. In the case of sustained winds above wind force 9 BFT, there is even a no-go area within a radius of seventy meters around the tower. The owner, Rijkswaterstaat, will take the necessary steps to save the iconic lighthouse for Huisduinen. Although it usually winds in Den Helder, today it is calm, allowing us to observe the tower up close with peace of mind.
