The Does is one of the oldest artificial waterways in the Dutch province of South Holland. It was probably dug before the year 1200.
Because the mouth of the Oude Rijn near Katwijk silted up in the 12th century, major drainage problems arose in the Rhineland. The Does was therefore dug from the Oude Rijn near Leiderdorp to the northeast for better water drainage, also from the surrounding peat bogs.
