Tolsteeg and Rotsoord is a neighborhood in the Zuid district, subdistrict Oud Hoograven/Tolsteeg, in Utrecht, the capital of the Dutch province of Utrecht. Tolsteeg has an ancient history.
Almost immediately after obtaining city rights in 1122, the city of Utrecht was surrounded by a moat and fortified/walled. Access to the city over land would henceforth take place through city gates. Directly outside the southern city gate, the Tolsteegpoort, a suburb developed already in the Middle Ages. It received a special legal status as Tolsteeg in the form of an extrajudicial area within the city freedom. The court also became known over time as Tollesteeg, Stolsteeg, and until 1830 Klein Kovelswade.
