De Olmenhorst is a family business that has been around for over 165 years. The land was bought in 1854, two years after the Haarlemmermeer had been drained, by Stephanus de Clercq (1826-1886), scion of an Amsterdam merchant family. He was the great-great-grandfather of the current owner.
Florian de Clercq (1960), the current owner, succeeded his father in 1986. He chose to focus only on fruit growing; The arable area was disposed of. Because things were going very badly in fruit cultivation not long after, the family started to broaden the business operations again. First with a small shop, for the sale of their own fruit, and with the organization of some events, to attract the public to the estate. Gradually, these activities have grown and expanded. In this way, De Olmenhorst has developed into a modern, dynamic and varied company, with many plans for the future.
As an estate, De Olmenhorst falls under the Nature Conservation Act. And because of the wide variety of birds, the 31-hectare area has been recognized as a voluntary bird sanctuary.
