On the initiative of former miner Theo van de Wetering, a monument has been placed here, on the high embankment on the Hofstraat, that commemorates the disappeared mining industry. It is made, among other things, from the wheel that turned above shaft II of the Wilhelmina State Mine.
The enormous wheel has a diameter of 6.3 meters and was given a tilted frame by the Kommunaal Kunstenaars Kollectief in 1982. This symbolizes a toppled shaft tower and also the liquidation of the mining industry "in such a radical way that it shocked many."
Shaft wheels hung in the bucks (metal structures) of shaft buildings, high above the elevator shafts. The shaft wheels rotated day and night to move the elevator, which carried people, materials and coal, up and down. It was the connection between above ground and underground.
