The Mazijk is one of the most beautiful spots in Wijk bij Duurstede and a well-kept secret. The green long strip lies in the middle of the old city center. In the middle of the 15th century, there was a canal here that was the connecting road between Duurstede Castle and the Great Church. David of Burgundy was the Bishop of Utrecht and lived at Duurstede Castle at that time. The story goes that the bishop often traveled up the Mazijk accompanied by music.
The canal was filled in during the 17th century. The name Mazijk likely comes from a family Van Maseijck who lived in this spot in the 16th century. Behind the walls of the Mazijk lies a small field, surrounded by beautiful houses. Events such as festivals and art markets are often organized here.
