The New Heath

The Nieuwe Heide, owned by the municipality of Best, covers 277.4 hectares and is located east of the A2 motorway and the built-up area of Best. It is a forest area with predominantly coniferous wood mixed with hardwood, which was created at the beginning of the last century on extensive wastelands (was first forested in 1921-1930). The main objective in the Nieuwe Heide is wood production with recreation as a secondary objective; southwest of the Sonseweg and south of the Wilhelmina Canal, the main objective is recreation with wood production as a secondary objective. In the small fens area, nature is the main objective, with wood production as a secondary objective. An attempt was made in 1997 to plant young trees on parts of some wide forest paths. Various information panels placed throughout the area point out many interesting things within nature to hikers. In the northern part of the area there is a - fenced off - war museum, including a catering business, and a recreational accommodation for the youth. The area is home to the Joe Mann Nature Theatre with an adjacent catering business. In that area, in addition to a jogging track, a cross-country run starts every month. In order to prevent 'ATB wildlife use', the municipality of Best realized a beautiful mountain bike trail through the Nieuwe Heide in 2000.
