The Sonse Heide in the municipality of Son en Breugel covers approximately 300 hectares and is located west of the bowl of Son. The area is owned by the municipality, but has been leased to the Forestry Commission, which manages this area. It is a forest area with mainly Scots pines and a part of deciduous forest. There is a nature reserve of 34 hectares in the site that consists of heathland, drifting sand heads, swamp and a fens complex called 'Oud Meer'. On the southern edge of the area there is a rendering plant. A lot of nature was lost due to the construction of the A50 motorway (which was put into use in September 2003) in the east of the research area. The forest management plan states that the area south of the Bestseweg has a multifunctional objective. This means that the forest has a wood production, recreation and nature function. Since 1995, the bird working group has been listing and protecting birds of prey and owls.
