The Papenvaartpad is an old church path along the Papenvaart that the Roman Catholics ('papen') used to walk to their church in Hazerswoude-Rijndijk.
A Papen or paap is another word from earlier times for Roman Catholics, but this is not used much anymore. In some places you can still find it in street name. The word was originally a corruption of Papa, or pope.
To prevent disturbance of the meadow birds (breeding season), it is not allowed to use this path from March 15 to June 15.
