Villas in Pierre

This beautiful building is located in the Torenstraat number 28 and is also called Villa Pierre. Villa Pierre was built in 1901 by order of the first director of Laura & Vereeniging: Paul Hubert Raymond Pierre. 
This mining engineer was born in Maastricht on 26 July 1857. Before his Laura days, he was director at the Ombilin coal mines on Sumatra (present-day Indonesia).
Paul Hubert Raymond Pierre was only willing to become director of Laura & Vereeniging on condition that he could live in the same way with equal housing as in Sumatra. It had to be a detached house with the character of
a country house with ten to twelve rooms, a central hall, a terrace, electricity and low-pressure steam heating.
It eventually became a colonial-style house with early Jugendstil influences. The front façade has rich stucco decorations above the door, above the balcony door and in the top façade. With these decorations the mining work is symbolized. Above the main entrance is the text 'Glück Auf'.
The garden was laid out in 1905. After 1925 the villa was converted into the headquarters of Laura & Vereeniging. In 1937 a substantial extension took place at the back of the original villa, then again in 1969. At the moment the villa is used as an apartment complex.
