The Lange Jan was a striking landmark of Heerlen. The Lange Jan was built in 1937/1938 to serve as the chimney of the power station of the Oranje Nassau Mine I. The Lange Jan was 135 meters high in total.
In 1953 a second chimney (De Lange Lies) was built next to it. The Lange Lies was a total of 155 meters high, both chimneys were the symbol of Heerlen as a city of miners.
After the closure of the Oranje Nassau mine I on 31 December 1974, the Lange Jan was blown up on Saturday 21 August 1976. The Lange Lies was blown up on 16 August 1976, which also meant the definitive end of the Oranje-Nassau I coal mine.
Today, on the site where both chimneys used to be, there is a part of the old building of the Central Bureau of Statistics from the 70s.
Only the shaft and collection building that now houses the Dutch Mining Museum is still visible from this time. You can clearly recognize this by the steel headstock with the red neon letters 'ON' of 'Oranje Nassau' on it. The mine's water tower has also been preserved.
In 2003, there were plans to build skyscrapers that would bear the names Lange Jan and Lange Lies.
