At first glance, you wouldn't expect this 'mountain' in hilly South Limburg to have been created entirely by human labour. All the rock that was not coal ended up on the former spoil heap of the Wilhelmina State Mine. For decades, the stones were poured onto the ever-growing mountain using long conveyor belts.
Today, this largest remnant of the mining industry is best known for the largest indoor ski slope in the world, a vast climbing park and the longest staircase in the Netherlands. Once you have conquered the 508 steps, you have an impressive view of the Euregio at 225 meters above sea level.
