Fort Vreeswijk, also known as Defensieswerk te Vreeswijk, is a defensive structure on the river Lek near Vreeswijk in the municipality of Nieuwegein. Among other things, it was part of the New Dutch Waterline. The history of Fort Vreeswijk dates back to the 16th century. A defensive structure was erected to protect against the Spanish troops. In later centuries this defensive structure was further extended. The current fort dates from 1855 and, together with the rampart, was an important part of the New Dutch Waterline.
In the Disaster Year (1672), the French built a redoubt around this location. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the fortification was rebuilt or rebuilt several times.
Fort Vreeswijk is valued as a national monument, including (among other things) a fort keeper's house and an artillery shed. The Antiquities Chamber Vreeswijk is located there. In addition to the antiquities room, scouting Vreeswijk has been located at this location since 1980.
