Chateau Marquette

Description

This distinctive castle was built on the remains of the Castle of Heemskerck, which dates back to 1250. At that time, it was used as a defense against invading peoples during the West Frisian Wars. There were constant frustrations among the elites in the 14th century fighting for the county, such as during the siege of the castle in 1358. In 1426, the castle was even completely plundered. In 1610, Lord of Marquette-en-Ostrevant purchased the castle and named it Chateau Marquette. Until World War II, it was primarily used as a country house, while during the war the German occupiers used it as a weather station. The Allies were aware of this and shelled it several times, causing serious damage to the roof. Since 1980, the estate has been owned by PWN. It has since been extensively restored to prevent further decay. Today, it is available for rent as an event or wedding location.
