The Protestant church in Cothen is also known as the St. Agnes Church, and has a beautiful history, which began around 1200. In the past 800 years, the church has undergone some changes.
As a result of skirmishes around Rhijnestein Castle - between troops of Count Willen V of Holland, and the Bishop of Utrecht (Jan van Arkel) Around 1400 they started rebuilding the church building. In 1445 the church was rebuilt, the tower in 1464. The attached sacristy, which now serves as a consistory room, dates from 1520.
In 1672 the church building was again destroyed by French troops. Again the rebuilding began, which was finished in 1735. The tower was no longer built. In 1890 the building was considerably enlarged to the size as it is today. A complete restoration took place in 1980, giving the interior its characteristic blue color.
Nice detail: If you look up in the consistory, you will see a beam in the ceiling with a number of holes at an equal distance. It is part of a windmill blade. The holes in it served to confirm the wind catch. In Cothen, nothing that could still be used was discarded!
