In 1934, the Simpelveld-Kerkrade-Schaesberg section was put into operation. The name 'Miljoenenlijn' came about because of the high construction costs. Despite the very short length of only 12.5 kilometers, the construction cost more than 12 million guilders, a lot for that time
huge amount.
Tunnels and bridges had to be built and a total of 3.5 million cubic meters of soil were moved to compensate for the height differences. Initially, the Miljoenenlijn was only used for freight and coal transport. After the closure of the coal mines, the Miljoenenlijn was no longer profitable.
It was then decided to maintain the railway as a museum line. The South Limburg Steam Train Company (ZLSM) now provides the nostalgic rides between Kerkrade-Centrum and Schin op Geul. Information about pick-up points and driving days can be found on the website.
Construction started in 1925 and was carried out by the Utrecht-based Railway Construction Company, a subsidiary of the Dutch Railways. The construction was very laborious and expensive. For example, the mining industry could cause continuous subsidence.
To keep height differences as small as possible, a lot of soil is moved in the hilly area. While in the valley of the Anstelerbeek in Kerkrade the railway embankment will be raised by approximately 32 metres, the railway line between Kerkrade and Simpelveld (not to be
have to ascend and descend a lot) to be more than 18 meters below ground level.
