WESTERGO

The Middelzee (a medieval estuary) divided the northern part of the present-day province of Friesland in two. The area west of the Middelzee is Westergo, east of the Middelzee lies Oostergo.
The siltation on the coast did not occur regularly and continuously. During floods, the coastline was shifted inland and sand and clay were deposited by the sea. When landed, the coastline was shifted seaward and peat formation took place on a large scale.
During flooding, salt marsh walls were formed on the coast. These are ridges parallel to the coast from a few hundred meters to several kilometers wide. Salt marsh walls are created because part of the silted salt marshes erode, after which the eroded material is deposited over adjacent coastal areas.
Due to silting up of salt marshes outside the dikes, the land expanded towards the sea over time. The salt marsh walls show that the Frisian salt marsh coast has always shifted seaward. The later the salt marsh walls are formed (younger), the higher they are. This is related to the ongoing rise in sea level.
Relatively low zones arose between the salt marsh walls: salt marsh basins.
The salt marsh area therefore consists of an alternation of salt marsh banks and salt marsh basins. The difference in height between the two units is a maximum of 1 to 1.5 m.
The sand clay soils of the salt marsh banks are mainly used for arable farming. Heavy clay was deposited in the salt marsh basins and cattle breeding predominates here.
On the salt marsh walls along the old coastline of the Wadden Sea, mounds (refuge mounds) were erected on a large scale and mounds were created.
