This is a historic place stood. During the 80 years' war, Prince Maurits tried to cross the Dinkel with his troops. Don't be alarmed, with 9,000 infantrymen, 1,600 horses and cannons! Unfortunately, the bridge was not strong enough to carry the artillery in particular. The bridge was therefore reinforced with logs.
Oldenzaal, Ootmarsum and Enschede were liberated by the Prince in the year 1597. They were Spaniards and they weren't exactly known for their heroism.
The liberation of Ootmarsum cost three cannon salvos. In Oldenzaal there were 400 Spanjolen. They were shocked by the Orange force majeure. According to the information board, the conquest of that city took place in a special way. A drunken officer fired a few cannon shots towards Oldenzaal. That was enough for the Spaniards to run away. The bridge was later named after Prince Maurits.
