Description

This rampart of about 1 km is a 'land defence', a very old defensive structure from the 14th or 15th century. It was strategically made on a sand ridge between high fens, on the border of Fryslân and Drenthe, and served to stop enemies (roving, marauding gangs) from Drenthe.

Originally, the Landweer was overgrown with thorny shrubs and there was a wider ditch on the Drenthe side.

Landweren't found in areas where there was no strong central authority, especially in present-day Gelderland, Overijssel and Limburg. This land defence was donated to It Fryske Gea in 1930 by Jarich van der Wielen, the founder of the Volkshogeschool Allardsoog, and is the association's first possession.
